Learning not measurement

The widespread obsession with quantitative measures as the only indicator of success has
multiple real problems. It pushes people to discard the important qualitative inputs they
receive from customers or hear from employees everyday. It encourages a mentality of
quantity over quality that can unintentionally and counterproductively create an impersonal
and unsympathetic environment in a machinery that is set to cultivate positive conditions
for peoples’ lives. The public sector requires a performance management system, but surely
not one that is triggered by pressure. It requires a system that is triggered by the motivation
to learn and correct, applied at all levels. It needs a new mindset that corrects purpose of
measurement- a mindset that enforces measurement to understand, adjust course,
celebrate little successes and openly analyze mistakes so they are not repeated.
